After Care for Your Tattoo

Sammy Jean offers an aftercare process that involves applying Saniderm for the client at the end of the session, a clear sticker bandage that the client leaves on for 5-7 days. When they take off the bandage, the tattoo is healed. This speeds up the healing process immensely (tattoos will naturally take 2-3 weeks if healed with the traditional method). The saniderm takes out the need for washing and applying the ointment which is a huge plus for those that aren’t that great at remembering to do so, giving the tattoo the best chance to heal.

For those looking for a general guideline of how the healing process works. there is a short overview below. Each tattoo is unique, and so is its healing process, but here are some tips to ensure your tattoo heals flawlessly and becomes a lasting piece of art.

1. Gentle Cleansing: The Foundation of Healing

Start your aftercare routine with gentle cleansing. Use a mild, fragrance-free soap to clean your tattooed area, avoiding harsh chemicals that could impede the healing process. Pat the area dry with a clean, soft cloth.

2. Moisturize to Revitalize: Hydration is Key

Keep your tattoo moisturized by applying a water-based ointment, such as Aquaphor, in an extremely thin layer over the tattoo, ensuring there’s not too much ointment so it looks the skin to breathe. Proper hydration aids in the healing process and prevents excessive dryness, reducing scabbing and itching. Once the tattoo has stopped scabbing/flaking I would suggest switching to a non-scented lotion for the remainder of the healing process.

3. Shield from the Elements: Sun, Water, and Friction

Protect your new artwork from the elements. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, submersion in water (especially in the initial stages), and minimize friction from tight clothing. Opt for loose, breathable fabrics to promote optimal healing.

4. Embrace the Itch: But Don’t Scratch!

It’s normal for your tattoo to itch as it heals. Resist the urge to scratch; instead, lightly pat the area. Scratching can damage the tattoo and hinder the healing process.
